Today, I am reviewing the Urban Fantasy story Spider Mafia by Ville Merilainen. A thrilling, pseudo-horror story set in a world populated by sentient, anthropomorphic cats, Spider Mafia follows Trucillo Brown, agent for the FBI (Feline Badass Institution) as he picks up the trail of an ancient evil that’s kidnapping kittens and plotting to overthrow society as we know it. Despite its use of animal characters, the book definitely has plenty of adult themes, including the murder and enslavement of children, cursing, and family.I give this book a 3.75/5. Here is my breakdown.
Characters: 4/5. I feel like I could have known so much more about the characters than I do. Each one is interesting and unique – I didn’t feel burdened by generic, stock roles or archetypes, and the ideas of destined bloodlines brought out in the book hit the right notes with me. Still, I wish I knew more about Trucillo’s life before the story, about his romantic relationships (or lack thereof) and more detail about what happened with his niece. There are some awesome bits hanging out there, waiting for more development.
Plot/Storyline: 4/5. Spider Mafia does a very good job of blending the hard-boiled detective shtick with the magical elements of urban fantasy, and adds a healthy amount of tongue-in-cheek humor to boot. The plot hit the right beats and maintained its verisimilitude all the way through. I really enjoyed the storyline (despite the sneaky nature of some of the reveals) and felt for the characters.
One thing, though: a life bar? Really?
Flow: 3.5/5. Throughout most of the story, the writing flowed very well. Spider Mafia isn’t a long book, but it went very quickly, even so. I maintained interest throughout the work, digesting it quickly and enjoying it along the way.
So why the 3.5?
Because, at the very end, there is a moment where the character looks at the author. The writing explicitly states that he breaks the fourth wall. It was completely jarring, unnecessary, and didn’t work for me at all. I know the author’s trying to be funny and/or cute here, but it just annoyed me.
Spelling/Grammar: 4/5. Fairly solid. I noticed a couple of mistakes, but nothing worth writing home about or protesting outside the author’s home. A good, well-done editing job all around.
Overall: 3.75/5. This book is very unique and a great take on the genre. The characters are cool and you’ll find yourself smiling, if not laughing aloud, more than once. If you’re looking for deadly serious, dark-and-gritty work, stay away, but if you like a touch of humor in your urban fantasy, then check out Spider Mafia.

Spider Mafia eBook Ville Meriläinen Reviews
A thriller that despite its unusual setting keeps the reader involved and entertained throughout. The pacing of the story is superb, it knows exactly when to slow down to tug at the readers' heartstrings or give them more perspective, and when a faster action is required to reflect the sense of urgency and danger.
The story touches on some social issues but doesn't dwell on them and instead focuses on delivering really good action.
Overall a very enjoyable read and a really great first publication from mister Meriläinen. I am looking forward to his future works.
A truly amazing book. The way the author blends the world of cats in with human like traits is seamless and very entertaining. The tale is fun and familiar while still maintaining an original feel.
As my book club sat debating what to read next, a collective sigh emanated. We were a bit weary when it came to established writers and felt a bit silly (I had consumed at least 10 centilitres of alcohol so was feeling downright adventurous) thus decided it was time to venture into the unknown. Each of us had to pick one free book of an unknown author and review it (for the book club, I'm just so cool I go above and beyond, reviewing it here as well).
The others quickly came back to report great disappointment. However, I climbed down into the cesspit to uncover this gem. I WON BOOK CLUB! Well, there are no winners or losers in book club, but if there were, I would have won.
Spider Mafia is a story that reads like film noir. Only with cats. And spiders. I was deterred by the animal aspect and felt it would make the story somewhat ridiculous, but got over that pretty quickly, and you should too. This could've been done with just us boring humans, but then it would not have been so tongue-in-cheek, it would not have lend itself to an array of subtle jokes and references.
The book will make you chuckle in all the right places, but it also makes you care about the characters and their lives. The dialogue is fast paced and entertaining, but not generic or without depth. The story is fast paced, yet while reading it you always want to get to the next part even faster, because 'omg what will haaa-aaappen'.
In short, it has all the ingredients you want in a book. Suspense, interesting characters, a solid storyline and of course, a major blow out.
Not 5 stars material quite yet though. Why? The writing was amazing, but the poo reference might have been a tad too elaborate. Don't get me wrong, I love poo as much as the next girl, but one paragraph too long on that one I would say. The ending was fantastic, but perhaps too much so. I felt it was a bit far from the overall story and did not see it coming (in both a good way and a less good way). I think more foreshadowing during the story would have it come together better (there was foreshadowing though, but there could have been more to solidify the ending).
But I am not giving this 4 stars as a 'now now, you did your best, new author person'. I am giving this a full fledged four star 'established writer' person. As it deserves. Well done, sir. I will be keeping an eye on you and I will most definitely buy the next book that pops up here with your name on it, without urging from my book club next time. Thank you for not regretting diving into the cesspit (see, I like poo!).
A smooth read from beginning to...almost end. Despite my misgivings that this book might rely on some anthropomorphic gimmick, Meriläinen smoothly integrates 'animal' traits into a well-developed, engaging noir experience. I particularly liked the way the author tapped various breeds of cat to give them certain traits; it allows him to get away with the subtle racism that resonates through older noir writing. Characters were easily distinguished, action entertaining to read. Not once did Spider Mafia give the impression that it was anything but a nature novel about two 'FBI' agents getting caught up in a situation well beyond their experience.
I found the ending problematic in that it didn't seem to be worthy of everything that came before it. Things get a little too meta and rushed. They don't invalidate the journey but the last few chapters left me wishing the author had perhaps spent a bit more time ensuring the climax and denouement match the quality of the rest of the book.
